EA's Classic Franchises Ultima and Wing Commander May Be Put Up for Sale Following Saudi-Led Privatization

The gaming industry is buzzing with speculation following reports that Electronic Arts may be considering the sale of several beloved but dormant franchises, including the legendary Ultima and Wing Commander series. This development comes in the wake of EA’s ongoing privatization deal led by a consortium spearheaded by Saudi Arabian investment funds, which has prompted a comprehensive review of the company’s extensive intellectual property portfolio. For fans of these classic gaming series, this news could signal either a hopeful revival or the final chapter in these storied franchises’ histories.

The Privatization Deal Reshaping EA’s Future

Electronic Arts, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, has been undergoing a significant corporate transformation as part of a privatization effort led by Saudi Arabian investment interests. This deal, reportedly valued in the tens of billions of dollars, represents one of the most substantial acquisitions in gaming history. As part of the restructuring process, the new ownership has begun evaluating EA’s massive catalog of intellectual properties, many of which have remained unused for years or even decades. Industry analysts suggest that selling off dormant franchises could generate additional revenue while allowing EA to focus on its core money-making titles like FIFA (now EA Sports FC), Madden NFL, and Battlefield.

The Saudi-led consortium’s involvement in Western gaming companies has been part of a broader strategy by the Kingdom to diversify its economy beyond oil dependence, with the entertainment and gaming sectors identified as key growth areas. This acquisition follows similar investments in companies like Embracer Group, Nintendo, and various esports organizations, demonstrating the Middle Eastern nation’s commitment to becoming a major player in the global gaming industry.

Ultima and Wing Commander: Gaming Legends in Limbo

The Ultima franchise, created by gaming pioneer Richard Garriott (known to fans as Lord British), stands as one of the most influential role-playing game series in history. Spanning from 1981 to 1999, the main series produced nine numbered entries that helped establish many conventions of the RPG genre. Ultima Online, launched in 1997, became one of the first commercially successful massively multiplayer online role-playing games, predating World of Warcraft by seven years. Despite this legendary status, the franchise has been largely dormant since EA’s failed attempt to revive it with Ultima Forever in 2014, which was shut down after just two years of operation.

Wing Commander, meanwhile, revolutionized the space combat simulation genre when it debuted in 1990. Created by Chris Roberts, who would later go on to develop the ambitious Star Citizen project, Wing Commander combined cutting-edge graphics with cinematic storytelling, eventually featuring Hollywood actors like Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, and John Rhys-Davies in full-motion video sequences. The series spawned five main games, numerous expansions, an animated television series, and a feature film released in 1999. Like Ultima, Wing Commander has been abandoned by EA for over two decades, leaving fans hungry for a modern revival.

What a Sale Could Mean for These Franchises

The potential sale of these franchises has generated mixed reactions within the gaming community. Optimists point to successful revivals of dormant series by new owners, such as Microsoft’s resurrection of Age of Empires and the continued success of franchises acquired by Embracer Group before its recent troubles. A dedicated studio with passion for these classic titles could potentially bring them back to life with modern technology while respecting their legacy. However, skeptics warn that purchased franchises often end up in limbo with new owners who lack the resources or vision to properly revive them, or worse, become the basis for poorly received mobile games or low-effort cash grabs.

Industry experts estimate that iconic franchises like Ultima and Wing Commander could fetch anywhere from $50 million to $200 million each, depending on buyer interest and perceived revival potential. Companies like THQ Nordic (part of Embracer Group), Microsoft, and even Garriott himself have previously expressed interest in classic gaming IPs. The coming months will likely reveal whether EA’s new ownership sees more value in retaining these properties or cashing them out to focus on more immediately profitable ventures.

Expert Opinion: This potential sale represents a critical inflection point for gaming preservation and franchise revival. If acquired by developers with genuine passion for these classic series, we could witness a renaissance similar to what happened with XCOM under Firaxis. However, the most likely scenario involves these IPs being purchased for defensive purposes or minimal exploitation, which would be a tremendous loss for gaming heritage. The next 12-18 months will be decisive in determining whether Ultima and Wing Commander join the ranks of successfully revived classics or fade further into obscurity.
