Circana Analytics Agency Loses Key Data Sources as Xbox and EA Cease Sharing Digital Sales Statistics

Circana Analytics Agency Loses Key Data Sources as Xbox and EA Cease Sharing Digital Sales Statistics

The American analytics agency Circana is facing a significant data transparency crisis that could reshape how the gaming industry tracks and reports sales figures. As of July 2026, both Xbox and Electronic Arts have officially withdrawn from the company’s digital statistics sharing program, marking a substantial blow to one of the industry’s most relied-upon market research firms. This development raises serious questions about the future of gaming industry analytics and the availability of comprehensive sales data for publishers, developers, and investors alike.

The Collapse of a Critical Data Partnership

Circana, formerly known as NPD Group before its merger with IRI in 2022, has long been considered the gold standard for tracking video game sales in the United States. The company’s monthly reports have been essential reading for industry professionals, providing insights into hardware sales, software performance, and broader market trends. However, the departure of two major players from its data-sharing program represents an unprecedented challenge to the agency’s ability to deliver accurate and comprehensive market analysis.

The timing of these withdrawals is particularly notable given the ongoing transition in how games are purchased and consumed. Digital sales now account for the vast majority of game purchases, with some estimates suggesting that over 90% of PC games and more than 70% of console games are now purchased digitally. Without direct access to sales data from major platforms and publishers, Circana’s ability to paint an accurate picture of the market becomes severely compromised.

Historical Context and Industry Implications

The video game analytics industry has undergone significant transformations over the past two decades. In the era of physical retail dominance, tracking sales was relatively straightforward through point-of-sale data from retailers. However, the shift to digital distribution has made publishers and platform holders the gatekeepers of valuable sales information. Companies like Microsoft and EA possess detailed data about every transaction on their platforms, information that has become increasingly valuable and sensitive.

This is not the first time Circana has faced data access challenges. Nintendo has historically been reluctant to share comprehensive digital sales figures, and Sony’s participation has varied over the years. However, losing both Xbox and EA simultaneously represents a new level of data scarcity. Electronic Arts, as one of the world’s largest third-party publishers with franchises like FIFA (now EA Sports FC), Madden, Battlefield, and The Sims, represents a massive portion of the gaming market. Similarly, Xbox’s platform data encompasses not only first-party Microsoft titles but also provides insights into the broader Xbox ecosystem.

Industry analysts suggest several possible motivations behind these withdrawals. Companies may be seeking to control their own narratives around sales performance, particularly during periods of intense competition. There are also concerns about competitive intelligence, as detailed sales data could potentially benefit rivals. Additionally, some companies may prefer to release information selectively, highlighting successes while downplaying underperformance.

Impact on Industry Transparency and Future Outlook

The consequences of this data drought extend beyond analytics firms. Investors, journalists, and even other game developers rely on comprehensive market data to make informed decisions. Without accurate sales figures, assessing the commercial viability of different game genres, platforms, or business models becomes significantly more difficult. Smaller publishers and independent developers, who often use industry-wide data to benchmark their own performance and plan future projects, may find themselves operating with less market intelligence than ever before.

Looking ahead, Circana and similar analytics firms may need to develop new methodologies to estimate digital sales, potentially relying more heavily on surveys, panel data, and statistical modeling. Some industry observers have suggested that this could lead to the emergence of alternative data sources, such as tracking services that monitor player activity, achievement unlocks, or social media engagement as proxies for sales performance. However, these methods introduce additional uncertainty and potential for error compared to direct sales data sharing.

Expert Opinion: The withdrawal of major publishers from data-sharing programs signals a broader industry trend toward information control that could fundamentally alter market transparency. As gaming companies increasingly view their sales data as strategic assets rather than public information, we may see the emergence of a two-tiered analytics landscape where only the largest players have access to comprehensive market intelligence. This shift could ultimately harm smaller developers and create barriers to entry in an already competitive market.
